Monmouth Civic Chorus Performs "I Have a Dream"

Darrell Lawrence Willis, Sr. will portray Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in the Monmouth Civic Chorus concert I Have a Dream on Saturday, March 16, 2013 at 8:00 pm. at the Count Basie Theatre, 99 Monmouth Street, Red Bank, New Jersey. This unique concert honors the 50^th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s iconic speech, and the 150^th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation. Through music, readings, and reflections, the program will explore the growth of freedom in our country’s history. The music will range from African-American spirituals and Civil War songs to more contemporary pieces like a choral arrangement of U2’s moving tribute, MLK.

Tickets are $30 for premium seating ($27 seniors, $25 groups, $10 students), and $25 regular seating ($22 seniors, $20 groups, $5 students). Tickets and information are available at www.monmouthcivicchorus.org or (732) 933-9333.

ATLANTIC HIGHLANDS, NJ - When one decides to become an educator, one of the top reasons is to teach students and help them to grow. Quickly, it is easy to see how students can often teach us. Today was a perfect example of just that. I was lucky enough to watch as Rachel Kovach, and 8th grader at Mother Teresa Regional School, recorded a public service announcement with Mark Herzlich of the New York Giants. Rachel has taught me so many lessons throughout her battle with cancer.

Although Rachel could have asked for a trip to Disney, tickets to a concert, or meeting a famous swimmer, she chose to have her Make a Wish be about helping others. Lesson #1 – Put Others First. Since her initial diagnosis of Ewing Sarcoma, Rachel has been all about helping others. She participated in fundraisers, started a blog, spoke to large groups, joined the Junior Board of Children's Hospital and the Make Some Noise Foundation, and has visited with other patients. Her wish was to make a public service announcement about pediatric cancer.

Wall High School Scores Three of Monmouth Festival of the Arts Student Art Winners

The top prizes went to Artemis Tapliga (right) taking first place for her pencil work entitled The Runaway. Second place (center) went to Brandon Nicolas of Long Branch High School for his charcoal self portrait on wood. Wall High’s Bridget Foster (left) took third place for her pencil entitled, Screaming Girl. The top three winners won cash prizes and tickets to the Monmouth Festival of the Arts which takes place from Saturday, April 13 through Wednesday, April 17, where their work will be prominently displayed. Tinton Falls, NJ - The Monmouth Festival of the Arts (MFA) held it annual Student Art Competition and Art Workshops on Sunday, February 3, at Monmouth Reform Temple (MRT), in Tinton Falls, NJ. High school juniors from schools throughout Monmouth County competed in this year’s competition for cash prizes and the right to display their winning work in the 43^rd Monmouth Festival of the Arts, which takes place from Saturday, April 13 to Wednesday April 17. The juried art show is one of the premier art events in Monmouth County featuring art in all mediums from over 160 artists.

Wall High School took three of the eight prizes, with Artemis Tapliga taking first place for her pencil work entitled The Runaway. Regal Pointe Resident Turns 103 with a Celebration

emily_cook MIDDLETOWN, N.J. – Attitude can set the stage and allow for a terrific life-long performance. Emily Cook, resident of Regal Pointe Independent Living, isn’t even close to her final encore, and she is turning 103 years old on February 16. Her journey was not always an easy one, but she persevered through good and bad times.

Faced with adversity at a young age when her father died, Emily and her six siblings all quit school to help support the family. She was 13 and it was the eve of the Great Depression. Not one of her sisters and brothers went to high school. Her memories of those tough times include waiting in bread lines and having a ticket to get gas for their car.

Not afraid of hard work, Emily was employed by Westinghouse, Western Electric and RCA as a factory worker and retired at age 62. She reminisces that her job allowed her the luxury to travel when she had vacation and to build lasting relationships.
