Helping Highlands Survivors - Raising Funds for Housing, Medical Needs

It would be hard to find someone in the tri-state area that wasn’t impacted by Superstorm Sandy. Some of us were more fortunate than others only sustaining the inconvenience of the loss of power or relatively minor property damage. Many others, however, had their lives thrown into turmoil with the loss of homes, cars, property and in some cases loved ones. One of the areas particularly hard hit along the Jersey shore was Highlands, NJ.
Located at the tip of the Jersey shore, Highlands is a small historical fishing village with about 5,000 residents. It’s a place where my family has deep roots tracing back to the original settlement of the area when it was known as Parkerstown. For me personally, my early years were spent there as a baby and a survivor of Hurricane Donna in 1960. Later in life I would go on to meet my wife Abbie while working at a local restaurant called The Clam Hut (which sustained significant damage during the storm).

Discovered During Demolition of Joseph C. Caruso Elementary School
KEANSBURG, NJ – The New Jersey Schools Development Authority (SDA) joined Gerald North, Superintendent of the Keansburg School District, and other district officials to unveil the contents of a time capsule found during the demolition of the former Joseph C. Caruso Elementary School. The time capsule was discovered, by chance, encased in the cornerstone of the building. Tricon Enterprises, Inc., the general contractor responsible for the demolition of the Caruso building, found the small metal box when the cornerstone, dated 1921, was removed from the building. Upon discovering the time capsule, Tricon Enterprises, Inc. carefully removed the time capsule from the cornerstone by hand with a chisel in order to preserve its contents.
“The contents of this time capsule will serve as a reminder to the students and the Keansburg community of the long history of the Joseph C. Caruso Elementary School,” said SDA CEO Marc Larkins. “We look forward to providing the Keansburg community with a new school building that will continue the traditions and path of excellence for their children.”

MIDDLETOWN, NJ - Returning to the Middletown Township Public Library, pianist Ross Riordan will be performing original compositions, in concert on Sunday, December 30, 2012, beginning at 2:00 p.m.
Riordan’s style defies categorization. He incorporates lively, complex rhythms as well as quiet, brooding melodies. Ross is constantly working on his compositions, whether he is sitting in front of a piano or not.
Riordan has been studying piano with Elvira Hortolanyi Major since 2006. He has received classical training as well as instruction in improvisation and composition from Ms. Major, who can trace her line of instructors back to Carl Czerny, a student of Beethoven and a teacher of Liszt. He has been recognized with five certificates from the American College of Musicians’ Piano Guild, passing with distinction the music theory exam of the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music. Ross has participated in annual recitals as well as many impromptu performances at the Atrium at Navesink Harbor.
The concert will take place in the library’s Community Room at 55 New Monmouth Road, Middletown, NJ 07748. Funding for this program comes from the generous support of the Middletown Township Public Library Foundation, Inc.

Organizers Needed to Serve on Advisory Committee
MIDDLETOWN, NJ – After hundreds of residents came forward to help their neighbors in the wake of Superstorm Sandy, the Township Committee has established a new advisory body, the Middletown Volunteer Corps, to manage the township’s wealth of kind-hearted volunteers.
The Middletown Volunteer Corps will manage volunteer services during recovery phase of Superstorm Sandy. The Volunteer Corps will also be available to supplement the services of emergency responders in times of need during future disasters and serve as a resource for future community-based activities and initiatives, explained Mayor Anthony P. Fiore.
Volunteers are currently needed to serve on the corps’ nine-member advisory committee. The advisory committee is charged with assisting the township in establishing a permanent registry of residents available to volunteer in times of emergency. The advisory committee will develop a strategic plan regarding the organization, structure and mission of the Middletown Volunteer Corp including strategies for recruitment, training and community-based activities in which volunteers can register to participate, he said.
