Gas Prices Fall to Two-Year Lows

AAA Mid-Atlantic: The national gas prices average drops to levels last seen in December 2011.
The Week
Lower prices at the pump continue to be enjoyed nationwide, as motorists in every state and Washington, D.C. are appreciating cheaper prices than a year ago. The national average price for regular grade gasoline fell to $3.21 Friday. This price is seven cents lower than one week ago, 14 cents less than one month ago and 25 cents less than the same day last year. Friday’s average price for regular unleaded gasoline is the lowest price of 2013 and a price last seen on December 21 2011. National gas prices have dropped 38 cents since September 1 ($3.59) and have fallen on 61 of 68 days (through Friday) during this span.
Even as national gas prices have drifted lower, sustained expensive crude oil prices have been an effective floor for how low pump prices could fall. After settling above $100 per barrel for 15 straight weeks, the price of West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude oil finally settled below this mark on October 21 and has remained there each trading day since. Crude oil remained in the $93 to $96 per barrel range this week, pressured by rising supplies and continued weak demand. The U.S. dollar has also supported crude oil’s recent range by remaining somewhat stronger against foreign currencies this week. Crude oil settled at $94.35 at Friday’s close.

ATLANTIC HIGHLANDS, NJ - Students and staff of Atlantic Highlands Elementary School were excited and honored to host a visit today for a group of 20+ educators from Hangzhou, China. The visit, which was spearheaded by Dr. Michael Searson, from Kean University, and Mr. William Ciullo, principal of Highlands Elementary School, was a wonderful educational opportunity for all involved.
During the course of the day, the educators had an opportunity to visit all three schools in the Tri-District. They began their morning at Highlands Elementary then came for their visit here at Atlantic Highlands. Their day culminated with lunch and a tour at Henry Hudson Regional School.
While at Atlantic Highlands, our visitors were welcomed with a special performance of two songs presented by the fifth and sixth grade chorus. The group was then divided up and teachers and administrators guided small group tours of the building. This provided a wonderful opportunity for them to see all of the programs that are utilized at Atlantic Highlands and to discuss how they compare with programs in China. Many students had an opportunity to interact with the educators, and enjoyed saying hello in Chinese as well as sharing many welcome drawings that they had created. The visiting educators enjoyed seeing the use of technology throughout the building, the displays of student created artwork, witnessing a variety of interactive lessons, and hearing about the many community and parent supported activities that we have including the Tiger Patch Garden, Media Center volunteers, Math Olympics, and Field Day.

MIDDLETOWN, NJ - At 10:09 PM on Tuesday October 29th, 2013, the Middletown Township Fire Department was dispatched to a “report a fire in the garage at 298 Harmony Road”. Approximately 35 firefighters from 3 companies of the Middletown Township Fire Department (East Keansburg, Port Monmouth, and Old Village Fire Companies), under the command of Department Chief John D’Altilio, responded to the scene. At the time multiple fire units were returning from and earlier call in the area and were on the scene in less than two minutes after being alerted. Third Assistant Fire Chief Tony Citarella was the first to arrive and quickly assessed the situation. Seeing that the blaze in the garage was starting to extend into the attached 2 story residential structure, Chief Citarella directed the first hose team to attack the fire from the home’s second floor attic space. Additional hose teams were deployed to extinguish the fire from the garage level. According to Chief Citarella, the extremely fast response and the highly coordinated attack by the responding firefighters held the inferno in check and contained the majority of the damage to the garage portion of the structure.
